Wife of Nigeria’s Vice-President, Dolapo Osinbajo has emphasised her commitment towards Civil Society Organisations in advocating for the passage of the Child’s Rights Act in the remaining States of the country as well as a better implementation in those States that have passed it.
The Vice-President’s wife was speaking in Abuja at the National Conference on Social Protection for the Girl Child organised by ActionAid in partnership with Ford Foundation.
While acknowledging the existence of key legislation that deals with child marriage, she however maintained that the country is yet to see full implementation or positive results from this law.
She noted that so far only 23 States have domiciled the Child Rights Act, with 13 of the remaining states still at various stages.
Osinbajo also lamented the prevalence of child marriage in the north, insisting that such practice negatively affects the health, education, and economic condition and increases domestic violence of girls.
