Some drivers of Nigeria's future gathered together at the State House in Lagos to participate in a Thanksgiving Service in appreciation of God's mercies over Lagos state and by extension Nigeria.
I must commend Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola for continuing this tradition despite being a Muslim. It shows the strength of our unity in diversity.
In his speech, the state governor chastised doom trenders heating up the state and the country under the guise of religion. For him, thanking God for keeping the state and nation together was expedient.
According to the APC's Presidential Candidate, General Mohammadu Buhari (GMB), who appreciated the organisers for inviting him, "This year’s thanksgiving service brings together all Nigerians from all states; Christians, Muslim and all religions in Lagos to thank the Almighty God." "Religion must never be used as an excuse to divide us, oppress others or gain unfair advantage. All my life I have expressed the belief that all Nigerians must worship God according to their wish,” he said.
Find far below the transcript of Gen. Buhari's speech. It is noteworthy that GMB focused on thanksgiving instead of using this as a campaign opportunity. This speak volumes about his person and integrity.
Unfortunately, all some have focused on is the fact that Buhari had his cap on?! For real?
In 2011, the focus unfortunately was on a shoeless man who having felt the pain of poverty will empathise with the citizenry. Now we know better.
I urge you to leave the purview of baseless opinion and focus on substance to become an active participant in the change we need.
A picture is worth a thousand words! I'll leave you to caption these.

Buhari's Speech At The Annual Lagos State Thanksgiving Service ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your Excellency our host, the Governor of Lagos State.
Your Excellencies here present.
My Lords Spiritual and Temporal, Pastor and Mrs. E.A Adeboye;
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am honoured to participate this year at this Annual Lagos Thanksgiving Service. I thank the Governor of Lagos State and especially his dear wife - Her excellency, Mrs. Bimbola Fashola - for this very kind invitation.
I am happy to note that this yearly thanksgiving - although it is a Christian service, yet it brings together Nigerians of all faiths. Christians, Muslims and those of other faiths gather here annually, just to thank the Almighty God. This is as should be. Religion must never be used as an excuse to divide, to oppress others, or to gain unfair advantage.
All my life, I have expressed the belief that all Nigerians must be free to worship God according to their beliefs.
The duty of government is not religion. The duty of government is to ensure peace and security for all Nigerians regardless of tribe, race or religion.
This is the commitment that we all must make especially on this day of thanksgiving.
The Nigeria of our dreams is one where, we can all sit like this and rejoice together, and thank God together.
The Almighty God will help us to achieve that country of our dreams.
I wish you all a happy and joyful 2015. The year 2015, will be a year of success and victory for us all.
Thank you.
General M. Buhari.
