The Chess Games as we know opened by 3PM, following which the Queens and Social Pavilions hosted a short Inauguration Ceremony by 5PM today, 29 July 2022.

In "the year of the woman in chess”, Sonja Johnson, Chairperson of FIDE’s Planning and Development Commission, welcomed President Arkady Dvorkovich and Managing Director Dana Reizniece-Ozola to the stage.

FIDE’s ebullient Managing Director, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, who was spotted in a check dress at the grand inauguration ceremony at the stadium the day before, kickstarted the programme with remarks at 5PM followed by the FIDE President, Arkady Dvorkovich’s remark and others including the Pavilion Committee Chair.

According to the MD, “Chess is not only about professional sports: it is about using our great game for the benefit of society; embracing its diversity.”

This development is the All India Chess Federation (AICF) initiative to promote female chess and encourage social activities beyond the check board.

FIDE presented its social projects at the pavilion installed in the Expo area of the OIympiad.

Throughout the Olympiad in Chennai, there would be parallel activities at the Pavilion. Players and other participants are encouraged to tap into the essence in person or follow online.
