Nigeria is 52

Happy Independence!

I am so glad to return to you with this National Day Message. One of those who sent a message to Nigerians is adjudged the second most powerful woman in the whole world. Her name is Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th United States Secretary of State and wife of the former President of the United States. Here is her message:

I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Nigeria as you celebrate your Independence Day this October 1.

The strong ties between Nigeria and the United States are grounded in our shared values and mutual interest in fostering good governance, increasing economic growth, and promoting regional stability. We value this partnership and remain dedicated to working together to meet the challenges of the future.

On the 52nd anniversary of your independence, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous year.

How would it be to one day be in such a worthy position where you get to send birthday messages not only to people in your country but to countries outside yours! Of course you can only get there by being disciplined, diligent, determined and dedicated.
Let’s take a look at our National Pledge; we chant the words during school assembly and state or national events:

I pledge to Nigeria my country
To be faithful, loyal and honest
To serve Nigeria with all my strength
To defend her unity and uphold her honor and glory
            So help me God.

A pledge is a promise that you make on the honour of your name. It is like swearing or making an oath by your name. If your name means something to you, you will not make a vainful promise. Each time you read those words you are making an allegiance to be steadfast, devoted, committed, constant, truthful and straightforward. Each time you recite the pledge, you make an oath to perform duties and services with your blood, because that is where power and energy (strength) comes from. You swear to protect and guard the agreement that made us come together as one despite our diversity. You undertake to support Nigeria’s great respect, esteem and notable achievements. And because you know that humans are fallible, you seal your allegiance with a plea to God for assistance.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s 52nd Anniversary, I want you to meditate on the pledge, consider how our leaders have kept this promise and determine how you will keep this allegiance to ensure you do not fail where they have failed and excel where they have measured up to expectation.

I wish you a cheerful celebration.
